SOUTHAMPTON v SWANSEA RECAP: Saints see off Swans on south coast

Southampton comfortably defeated Swansea City 3-1 on Saturday.

The Saints skipped away to an early lead at St Mary's Stadium when summer signing Virgil van Dijk netted his first Premier League goal with a front-post header from James Ward-Prowse's corner in the 11th minute.

Ronald Koeman's side found themselves two to the good less than 10 minutes into the second half thanks to Dusan Tadic whose angled effort bobbled over Lukas Fabianski with some help from the boot of Ki Sung-yueng.

Southampton grabbed a third in the 61st minute through Sadio Mane who rifled beyond Fabianski from 20 yards before Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled one back for Garry Monk's Swans when he converted from the spot after Jose Fonte brought down Neil Taylor in the area.

The win lifts the Saints to 10th spot on the Premier League table with the Swans dropping to 11th following a third match in a row without a win.

MATCH OVERVIEW

Southampton: 3 (Virgil van Dijk 11', Dusan Tadic 54', Sadio Mane 61')
Swansea City: 1 (Gylfi Sigurdsson (PEN) 83')

TALKING POINTS

- Do the Saints have one of the most underrated attacks in the league? Grazing Pelle, Mane and Tadic all in scoring form so far this season.

- Can Swansea turn their travelling form around after failing to win in four matches on the road this term?

WHAT'S NEXT?

Southampton will now set their sights on a trip to reigning champions Chelsea on the weekend as Swansea prepare for the visit of the in-form Tottenham.

QUOTES CORNER

Southampton's Koeman was not getting carried away:

"We didn't create a lot of chances but we scored three times. But the performance was not very good, there were a lot of mistakes in possession.

"The win is important but it was not the best performance of the season."

Swansea boss Monk on another poor away display:

"It was very disappointing. That's two away games, today and at Watford, where we have been well below our usual standards.

"It's not good enough from us and it's not good enough for me."
