Southampton are determined to keep hold of teenage starlet Alex Chamberlain. The 17-year-old winger is a target for Arsenal and shocked Saints earlier this week by declaring he wants to leave the Championship club.
But Saints boss Nigel Adkins claims the player would be better off continuing his development at St Mary's.
"I keep saying it, we have to control the controllables," Adkins told the club's official website.
"Alex is a great player who worked very hard and excited the crowd. He came through our system and we are trying to do right by him and develop him and do right for the club.
"He's got to go out and perform, he did that and the crowd took to him in the right manner.
"Obviously off-the-field situations arise but that will happen time and time again. I like to think we are trying to control it in the right way and he performed very well as part of a team."
