Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has named Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld and Southampton's Virgil van Dijk the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Dutch defender van Dijk was particularly impressive in the first leg win of the EFL Cup semi-final over Liverpool on Wednesday night and received plenty of praise for his performance.

Le Tissier said on Sky Sports: "I like Alderweireld, and those two are the best two centre-backs in the Premier League."

The Saints legend also added that he expects captain Jose Fonte, who has handed in a transfer request, to leave the club this month.

"Jose will be missed, he's been a terrific servant for the club, but once you've put in a transfer request I don't think he can be expected to play tonight," he added.
