Southampton's Koeman excited about Gardos signing

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman was over the moon after making his second signing of the day on Thursday.

The Saints have brought in Romanian central defender Florin Gardos from Steaua Bucharest to add to the earlier capture of striker Shane Long from Hull City and Koeman was thrilled with the south coast club's latest capture.

"I am very happy to have Florin here," Koeman, who sees Gardos as a direct replacement for the departed Dejan Lovren, told the club's official website.

"He's still a young player so he can develop himself a lot more, and that's part of the ambition of Southampton.

"From the beginning, after Lovren left the club, we paid a lot of attention to Florin.

"Everybody knows the big names and the big players, but it's always more difficult to find one who's not so well known. The information the club has given to me about him has been very good.

"For now and for the future, we have a very good central defender."

Gardos becomes Koeman's seventh signing of the summer following the arrival of Long, Dusan Tadic (from FC Twente) Graziano Pelle (from Feyenoord), Ryan Bertrand (on loan from Chelsea) Saphir Taider (on loan from Inter Milan) and Fraser Forster (from Celtic) at St Mary's Stadium.
