Southampton are planning to sign Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk, who handed in a transfer request on Monday.

The Sun reports that the Saints are prepared to offer the Championship club £30m for their captain.

Despite Boro being relegated from the Premier League last season, Gibson was a stand-out performer for the club.

West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulls is also said to be interested in the Englishman.
