Southampton loss my mistake - Leicester boss Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri has shouldered the blame for Leicester City's defeat at Southampton on Sunday.

The Foxes began with a 4-3-3 formation at St Mary's which clearly did not work as the Saints skipped away to a two-goal lead by half-time through James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez goals.

A missed chance from captain Wes Morgan and a late penalty converted by Dusan Tadic, and conceded by Morgan, wrapped up the contest.

Ranieri admits that the usual 4-4-2 setup of the reigning champions would have been better to start with on the south coast buy still feels that Claude Puel's Saints were much better value than his side.

"I want to say that the two last matches (Chelsea and Southampton) were my mistake. I changed the shape to help the team, but the players didn't recognise my ideas," he told LCFC TV.

"We wanted to win and we wanted to do something good. For the players, it was important for them to keep going and improve.

"I wanted to close their movement because they wanted to keep possession of the ball. With the diamond, we made very good things but after we conceded two goals and I preferred to go back to the shape (4-4-2) that they understood better.

"Often we come back from 2-0 down and also we had a chance with the skipper (Wes Morgan), but today everything was wrong.

"The penalty, in my opinion, was not a penalty, but they deserved to win 2-0 so it's the same. We wanted to create some chances and we did, but not in the final third."

Leicester remain 15th on the table with 21 points from 22 matches which sees them just five points above the relegation zone.
