Southampton great Le Tissier: Man Utd offside goal would have been allowed

Southampton great Matt Le Tissier has claimed that bigger teams tend to receive favourable decisions from the officials.

Southampton suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the final of the EFL Cup on Sunday but the Saints had every right to feel aggrieved against the officials following the game after Manolo Gabbiadini's goal early in the contest was wrongly ruled out for offside by the assistant referee.

Club legend Le Tessier was understandably left very angry at the injustice suffered by the Saints and he has now claimed that bigger teams, such as United, tend to get favourable decisions in big matches.

Le Tessier told talkSPORT: "The history of football shows you the bigger clubs get a lot more decisions in their favour than the small ones.

"(If United had scored) it wouldn't have been given offside, I genuinely think that. The flag wouldn't have gone up in the first place.

"Big teams get so many more decision you (Max) must see that, surely? Do you think that officials are just not very good and that was a genuine mistake? There are certain decisions where the margins are so close, you can understand why mistakes are made.

"I still can't understand how he can give Gabbiadini offside when the ball was played by Cedric (Soares), he couldn't even see Gabbiadini because the defender was in the way.

"Surely that gives him a clue that, actually, Gabbiadini wasn't offside."
