Southampton great Le Tissier: Hoddle did not like me being compared to him

Matt Le Tissier believes he was not selected for England's 1998 World Cup squad because then-manager Glenn Hoddle was not too fond of him.

The former Southampton midfielder had often been compared to the type of player Hoddle was during his career and the now-46-year old feels those assessments did not sit well with the ex-England boss.

"The relationship with Glenn became a little bit strained. I was always looking for a reason why there was almost an animosity towards me," said Le Tissier on the Sky Sports documentary 'Le God: The Matt Le Tissier Story'.

"I don't think he was particularly keen on so many people comparing the two of us and me being mentioned in the same breath as him, as the same kind of quality footballer as him.

"It was a shame because to this day if anyone asks me the best manager I played under, tactically, Glenn would get that every day of the week."
