Southampton fullback Clyne: Afewee Academy earned me Spurs trials

Southampton fullback Nathaniel Clyne is proud of his London upbringing.

Clyne is fiercely proud of his roots in the south London suburb of Stockwell.

"I'm proud of where I'm from, definitely," said Clyne. "I grew up in Stockwell, which wasn't bad.

"I knew a lot of people and was quite popular, so when it comes to games now I have to give out a lot of tickets!

"Growing up in an estate with lots of flats there were a lot of people around so tickets are in demand for the game on Saturday.

"When I was growing up it started out as 'No Ball Games', but then they built a cage for football, which was pretty good.

"It's all-action football because the ball never goes out of play. Some people kick it against the wall and go round people that way.

"Then I started playing at the Afewee Academy in Brixton, which was a place which gave young kids the chance to show what they could do.

"I just loved playing football so didn't really think much of it until the coach, Steadman Scott, said I was good enough to join an academy and got me a trial at Tottenham.

"I started out as a striker, then became a winger and now I'm a full-back. When I was a striker I always wanted the ball and was always dropping back to get it.

"I was really good at tackling so ended up as a full-back at about 12 or 13."
