Southampton fullback Bertrand on Liverpool defeat: We gifted them goals

Southampton fullback Ryan Bertrand felt they gifted Liverpool their three goals for Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Anfield.

Bertrand was encouraged by aspects of the first period – just not the soft goals from which the hosts profited.

“It's disappointing. We've lost the game, but we've given them three goals," he said.

“When you come to places like this, it's always tough. You can't give them anything.

“It's a difficult one because, as a team, I actually thought in the first half we were in the balance, and created some good stuff down the left-hand side and down the right-hand side.

“The boys were controlling the midfield well, but we can't just give them three goals, because that's given us a mountain to climb.

“It's important we go back to the training ground and eradicate that for the next game.

"You look at the second half and we didn't concede – we showed character, which is good, but we played better in the first half and conceded three. That's frustrating, but we'll keep going."
