Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk insists that the Premier League side deserved to beat Inter Milan in the Europa League tie on Thursday.
The Saints squandered many chances to score in the first half, and they were made to pay for their wastefulness when Antonio Candreva won it for the Italians in the 67th minute of the game.
"We were the only team that deserved to win and to concede a goal with their only chance frustrated," Van Dijk said following the 1-0 defeat at San Siro.
"We should have had the game dead and buried in the first half but that is what happens if you don't take your chances.
"I had a big chance with my left foot and a header. We had so many opportunities to win the game."
