Southampton defender Jose Hooiveld admits praise from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this month lifted them.

Hooiveld says comments from Fergie set them up for their shock win over Manchester City.

"Manchester City at home was a great result, but could have even been 5-1 for us. In recent weeks Southampton have done well. So we lost to Manchester United 2-1, however, Sir Alex Ferguson said we were the toughest team this season which has visited.

"A better compliment is inconceivable," said Hooiveld to Voetbal International.
