Southampton technical chief Martin Hunter says playing Calum Chambers in midfield as a teen was no accident.
The defender moved to Arsenal in the summer and has since won his first cap with England.
Hunter told the Sunday Telegraph: "Calum Chambers had a year or more playing in midfield for a purpose - to sharpen up his first touch and awareness.
"He can play anywhere. I tried to explain to him he reminded him of Paul Madeley (versatile Leeds United legend of the 70s). I got him to go and Google Madeley. 'I see what you mean'."
