Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese stands by his sack policy for managers.
Alan Pardew was sacked in 2010, only two days after a 4-0 victory at Bristol Rovers.
Nigel Adkins was dismissed in January after winning back-to-back promotions - and two days after a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
"Obviously we don't just change managers for the sake of it," said the Saints chairman at the Leaders in Football conference. "We all want what is best for the club. I knew what was going on inside.
"We were coming through different leagues and we needed someone to fulfil the role in certain situations. When you are in League One, it is different from the Championship and different from the Premier League. These changes progress you as a football club.
"We changed managers on the back of good results and people say, 'Why do you change now?' - especially in Nigel's case as we came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge.
"But this is progress, especially when you have someone lined up.
"The decision has been taken beforehand and maybe a lot of people will say, 'Let's wait now', but we thought it was the right time to do it. I always planned in advance exactly the day I was going to do it.
"I think, to be honest, looking at those two scenarios, if one day I was in a similar situation again, I would do it the same way again.
"You have to make the decision whether it is popular or unpopular."
