Southampton are facing the prospect of seeing their defence ravaged over the coming transfer windows.

A report in The Sun suggests that the Saints fear they will lose star centre-backs Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk to Premier League rivals either this winter or in the summer.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool are being heavily linked with the defensive duo who have been colossal for the south coast club in recent times.

The Red Devils have made no secret of their desire to sign a quality centre-half and Portugal international Fonte has emerged as a target previously.

Liverpool have also shown slight interest in Saints skipper Fonte, 32, but not as much as Dutchman van Dijk, who is also on the radar of Merseyside rivals Everton.

It is understood that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is eager to lure the former Celtic star to Anfield and is believed to be preparing a sensational £40million double swoop for he and young full-back Sam McQueen.
