Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is backing Ryan Bertrand for an England recall.

Koeman believes Bertrand can stake his England claims again now that United's former Saints left-back Luke Shaw is out long term with a broken leg.

Bertrand, 26, has not yet played this season but Koeman said: "Ryan is close to being back. The plan is that he starts on Monday with the Under-21 team for 60 minutes and maybe he can be part of the team for next weekend against Swansea.

"Ryan has already been selected twice for England. He's a candidate for Roy Hodgson so it's up to Ryan to show his level and to be part of the national team."
