Ronald Koeman insists that he was right not to use Sadio Mane during the midweek Europa League playoff defeat against FC Midtyjlland.
Mane was only named on the subs bench ahead of Southampton's meeting with the Danish club on Thursday night and it was clear to see that the Saints looked toothless in attack without their star man.
Surprisingly, manager Koeman decided not to bring on Mane even when his side were trailing and the Dutchman has now gone on to explain his decision.
Koeman said: "Sadio wasn't 100 per cent and I didn't take the risk because it's the start of the season. It's not everything today."
The saints lost 1-0 in Denmark to fall out of Europe's second tier club competition 2-1 on aggregate.
