South Korea appoints Choi Hang-kee as new manager

Choi Hang-kee has been named the new manager of the South Korean national team.

The 52-year old comes into the Taeguk Warriors setup as the replacement for Cho Kwang-rae who was relieved of his duties earlier this month.

The South Korean Football Association (KFA) were being linked with possible moves for recently-sacked Sunderland manager Steve Bruce along with Sven-Goran Eriksson and Luiz Felipe Scolari but has opted for Choi who has departed his role at K-League club Jeonbuk Motors.

"We valued the ability to stabilise the national team and maximise players' capabilities over a short period of time," the head of KFA's technical committee Hwangbo Kwan told The Korea Times.

"He has a ton of coaching experiences and is a great motivator. Also, he has a deep understanding of Korean football.

"I personally met coach Choi three times to persuade him. We had some candidates from overseas but Choi was our top choice."
