The son of Manchester United legend Denis Irwin is being likened to Paul Scholes.
Only problem is for United fans - Liam Irwin is playing for the academy at Bolton Wanderers!
The 17-year-old's form has earned him a call-up to the Republic of Ireland Under-19s squad for the upcoming 2011 European Championship qualifiers against Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Serbia.
And it has also prompted his U18s boss David Lee to compare him to another United midfield legend, renowned for his goalscoring exploits.
Lee told the Bolton News: "Liam's goal will have sent him away on a high. He is technically a very good footballer and what we have worked on is his ability to get into the box.
"He is a bit like Paul Scholes in the way that he can ghost in unnoticed, and once he gets in those positions, then there is no better finisher than him from a midfielder's perspective.
"This call-up just reflects the progress that he is making and international recognition shows that he is definitely heading in the right direction. He is very level-headed, takes advice on board and if he is half as decent as his dad was then we will have a great player."
