Socceroos matches to back on prime time

The Socceroos will be back on free-to-air when the current broadcasting contract ceases. At present, all Socceroos matches are being broadcast on Foxtel due to the contract with Football Federation of Australia, which ends in 2013. Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy believes the Socceroos should be on a par with other national teams and shown on prime time television. Speaking to News.com.au, Senator Conroy said, "We believe that the Socceroos are a national icon in the same way as the Wallabies, the Test cricket, the Kangaroos and a whole range of other sports. "We have said that we'll be putting the ... Socceroos World Cup qualifying matches back on the anti-siphoning list. "There's an existing contract at the moment that there will be some significant financial penalty for the football federation if we intervene. "But we have an absolutely clear cut commitment before the election to restore the Socceroos.''
