Smith is the right man to rescue Rangers – ex-Villa boss McLeish

Alex McLeish believes that Walter Smith is the perfect man to save Rangers and get the club back on top.

Alex McLeish believes that Walter Smith is the perfect man to save Rangers and get the club back on top.

The Ibrox outfit could be turned into a newco after their dreadful financial situation forced liquidation last week with new owner Charles Green unable to get a Company Voluntary Arrangement which would have seen Rangers continue as normal.

Despite only taking control recently, it is believed that Green may still sell to a consortium headed by former manager Smith and McLeish suggests that would be a great move for the good of the club.

“I believe the situation called for someone like Walter to step in. He has made his stance to keep Rangers, the institution, alive,” Eck told SunSport.

“I don’t think there is anyone better equipped than Walter to take over at a time like this. It’s a part of the jigsaw that fits perfectly.

“I spoke to him at the end-of-season dinner for the Barcelona Bears. We didn’t discuss his plans, but we did speak about the shambles, the mess.

“I must admit I’d been thinking for a while Walter surely had to be considering a move like this, especially if it involved big businessmen like Douglas Park and Jim McColl.

“I wasn’t surprised when I saw those names linked to it. They seem the right type of men to go and back this kind of project.

“I’ve wondered a few times if Walter could be involved in something like this. When I saw him announce this, I thought ‘at last’.

“It just seems to be a move made in heaven for Rangers.”
