Smith makes no apologies for Champions League tactics

Rangers boss Walter Smith had no qualms over his defensive tactics that saw his team hold Manchester United to a scoreless draw at Old Trafford Smith claimed he had no other option bearing in mind the resources at his disposal.

"We are obviously please to get a point in our first Champions League game. We worked very hard for it.

"The boys showed great concentration and limited United to long range shots.

"I'm proud of the way my players played. We were not very tidy in possession at times but obviously I'm happy with a point."

Smith went with five at the back, leaving United to long range efforts.

He said:"You always try to look at the opposition and work out how we can stop them.

"With more care we could have create more but we expected to come here and defend and we did that well.

"The game was as I thought it would be. We tried to nullify them and we managed to do that.

"We don't feel proud of what we are doing but there is nothing else left for us."
