Smith accepts Rangers postponement a welcome break

Rangers boss Walter Smith admits Sunday's postponement against Dundee United at Tannadice gave his players a much-needed break. Smith's squad was stretched due to injuries and there was the prospect of a negative reaction following their Champions League defeat to Manchester United at Ibrox last Wednesday.

Smith told RangersTV: "I don't think there was ever a chance of the Dundee United game going ahead.

"Everyone was aware on Saturday that the weather forecast was such that the game wouldn't go ahead.

"However, we still had to travel up there - and we had a slightly long journey back.

"It took us about four and a half hours to get back.

"It was dangerous for people to travel, never mind the state of the pitch.

"From our own point of view we probably needed the break anyway having played in the Champions League on the Wednesday night.

"In saying that we would have rather played the game than not. We had prepared for the game and we were there but it wasn't to be."
