Skipper DeMerit thrilled as Vancouver Whitecaps end winless run

Vancouver Whitecaps broke a seven-game winless run by beating Chivas USA 4-0 on Wednesday night.

The British Columbia outfit gave themselves every chance of making the playoffs in just their second MLS campaign by recording their first victory since mid-August with that run including five-straight losses and two draws.

Goals from Gershon Koffie, Dane Richards, Camilo and Barry Robson allowed the 'Caps to go five points clear of sixth-placed FC Dallas on the Western Conference table and captain Jay DeMerit was delighted to see his team perform so well, particularly up forward.

"It's been the performance we've been waiting for for a long time," DeMerit told reporters following the match.

"It takes a certain effort from a lot of guys to do performances like tonight. For once we put a performance together - the defenders defended well, and the goalscorers went and scored goals.

"When guys are taking responsibility for their jobs, then you can sit back and enjoy it, because that's what we're here to do, we're here to enjoy it.

"We haven't been enjoying it lately. Sometimes it's a grind. Sometimes you got to do what you don't want to do to win games. But I think it all came together tonight and now that has to continue."
