Preston boss Paul Simpson admits he's had to tell on-loan Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll some home truths during his time at Deepdale.

Simpson revealed he has had to give Carroll, who scored his first senior goal in midweek, some stick behind the scenes and said: "He's had a tough time. I've been hammering him every single day in training.

"He's the type of lad who doesn't push himself as hard as he should but I've sensed over the last week that the penny is starting to drop."
