Silva absence forces Brazil to hand captaincy to PSG new boy Luiz

David Luiz has been handed the Brazil national team captain's armband following the unsuccessful appeal of Thiago Silva.

Regular Selecao skipper Silva received a second yellow card in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Colombia on Friday which would force him to miss tomorrow's World Cup semi-final against Germany.

Brazil team officials looked to appeal Silva's suspension but after FIFA confirmed they would not rescind the sanction, former Chelsea defender Luiz will step into the role vacated by his new Paris Saint-Germain teammate.

Luiz said: "I'm ready. I'm vice-captain and this group is very easy to handle because everyone's very down to earth. It won't be a tough job at all."

Brazil takes on Germany in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday, July 8 for the chance to meet either Argentina or Holland in the final in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, July 13.
