Sigmund expecting Wellington Phoenix to get off to winning start

Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund believes the side can get their A-League season off to winning start on Friday night.

Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund believes the side can get their A-League season off to winning start on Friday night.

The New Zealanders had the bye in round 1 but will host Gold Coast United at Westpac Stadium in week two of the 2010/11 season.

Sigmund says the players are ready to go and are expecting to be a tough unit to beat after a successful 2009/10 where they made the finals for the first time.

“We've got a good bunch of guys who are just wanting to win," he told Sportal."We are all pumped up. We missed the first round through a bye and now we are ready to go and we're at home and we just want to get out there and get started."

Last season, the Phoenix thrashed United 6-0 and although Sigmund is not tipping a similar result, he said a win is achievable if the players can perform at a similar level.

“If we can do what we did last year to them and keep the pressure on high up, where Vinnie (Lia) and Tim Brown have done a great job in the midfield, then it will just keep pushing them back and hopefully we can get Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre on the score sheets again,” he added.
