Shrewsbury boss Mellon proud of effort at Crystal Palace

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon was proud of his side as they managed to hold their Premier League opponents Crystal Palace at 1-1 in normal time of the Capital One Cup fixture.

The Shrews couldn't keep up the standard of their game in extra-time and eventually bowed out 4-1 to the Eagles in the second round fixture.

"The way we passed it and tried to get good control of the game I thought was fantastic," said Mellon.

"In the end some unbelievable quality told, and we looked like the team that had played six games in two weeks.

"I must admit I wouldn't have wanted to go to extra time.

"It's been a tough demand on us but I couldn't be prouder of the way they represented the football club and the way they performed.

"I think they were fresher than us at the end, yeah.

"I'm not taking away anything from Palace though, they've got some great players with some great quality.

"They came through in the end and we do nothing but wish Crystal Palace well in the next round."

Matt Tootle opened the scoring for the visitors in the ninth minute before Palace equalised through Dwight Gayle from the penalty spot four minutes before the break.

Extra-time goals from Glenn Murray (again from 12 yards), Chung-yong Lee and Wilfried Zaha decided the second round tie.
