Sheff Wed unable to afford fee for Preston's Nolan

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has admitted the club could not afford to sign defender Eddie Nolan. The full-back spent the end of last season on loan with the Owls and Irvine was keen to bring the 21-year-old back to Hillsborough.

However, Irvine has revealed his former club Preston North End wanted £100,000 for Nolan, which proved to be out of the Owls' reach.

"We were quoted £100,000 for Eddie," Irvine told the Sheffield Star . "We didn't have £100,000 to spend on a fee, so we weren't able to do anything.

"We moved on, and got Jon and Daniel, and I'm delighted with what we've got. They look very promising just now.

"I think Preston realised they weren't going to get that sort of fee, in the current market."
