Sheff Utd programme sells for £9,000

A rare 1915 Sheffield United v Chelsea FA Cup final programme - which cost just one old penny new - has sold for a staggering £9,000 at auction, reports the Sheffield Star. The valuable 16-page programme was bought by a mystery bidder at Graham Budd Auctions at Sotheby's in London.

It was issued for the controversial FA Cup final at Old Trafford - switched from London to avoid travel disruption in and around the capital - on April 24 1915 during the First World War.

It became known as the Khaki cup final because so many of the 49,557 spectators were in uniform.

But it caused disquiet and ill-feeling because many people felt the game should not have gone ahead with so many British men being killed and maimed in horrific battles just over the Channel.
