Shearer: Tottenham striker Defoe ideal Rooney partner

Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer says Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe deserves an England chance.

Shearer rates Defoe as an ideal strike-partner for Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

He told The Sun: "It's worked with Emile Heskey so far so I can't see Capello changing that. But I think in Jermain Defoe he is a fantastic option if he wants to change that.

"I'm a big admirer of Defoe and the way he plays and scores. I'm just second-guessing but I'd assume he'd start with Heskey and Rooney because he's played that way and it's worked for him in the qualifiers."

If England play Heskey at all, they might as well be ready for another mediocre performance in a world cup they're expected (as usual) to do well in. We're talking about strikers here. How many goals has heskey scored this season (3 actually)? It's like comparing an elephant to a cheetah. He's so slow and predictable, he wouldn't be in my starting 111, but I guess he'll play, then England will be questioning what went wrong, then there'll be a new manager, then the new manger will pick the same sorry failures, then blah blah blah etcetera etcetera.
