Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has questioned the character of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United players.

After defeat at Chelsea, Shearer wrote for The Sun: "Sir Alex Ferguson must have been wondering what the hell is going on as he watched this shambles from the stands.

"Louis van Gaal spent a fortune — Mourinho has done the same thing — and this is what they have got to show for that huge investment?

"One of the most worrying things for Mourinho is the fact the players are not playing for him the way you would expect — worrying echoes of the way things were just before he left Chelsea ten months ago.

"I'm not suggesting he is on his way out again or anything like that, just that he has got to find a group of players who will sweat blood for him and for the United jersey.
