Newcastle United may lose Alan Shearer at the end of the season over a lack of transfer funds.
The Sun says Toon owner Mike Ashley has just £10million available to spend on players next season.
But with £8m potentially heading to ex-boss Kevin Keegan as part of his compensation claim, Shearer would be left with virtually nothing to play with.
And that has placed into doubt his push to become permanent Newcastle boss.
A source close to Ashley said: "The club was in a bad way when Mike bought it. He's sorted out the financial side but it'll take time to sort out the playing side."
