Shearer: England captaincy has inspired Liverpool's Gerrard extra 20-30%

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes the England captaincy has inspired Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard at the Euros.

Shearer wrote in The Sun: "t made a difference to me when Glenn Hoddle handed it to me in September 1996.

"It is now making a big difference to Steven Gerrard.

"That captain's armband has brought another 20-30 per cent out of him in an England shirt.

"Yes, he had it in the World Cup but it was more by default. This time the new manager has come in and decided 'You're my man'.

"That has made Gerrard feel 10ft tall and you can see it in his performances. I can see a swagger in his walk, in his play.

"I can see someone who has taken on that extra responsibility and used it as a great force, not only for himself but his team."
