Shearer: Arsenal loss shows importance of Chelsea captain Terry

Ex-Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has stated that Chelsea's loss against Arsenal highlighted the importance of John Terry to the Blues.

Chelsea suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and it would be fair to state that the Blues' backline was shred to pieces during the encounter with Gary Cahill copping the brunt of the criticism.

Following the game, manager Antonio Conte blasted his side and now Shearer has gone on to state that the heavy defeat just highlighted how important veteran centre-half Terry, who was sidelined with injury, is for the West Londoners

Shearer wrote in his column for The Sun: “The fact that the absence of a 35-year-old John Terry is causing them major concerns tells you where they are at.

“To think they were happy to let him go at the end of last season.

“He is sidelined after damaging ankle ligaments in a 2-2 draw with Swansea and the back four has fallen to pieces. There is no way they are going to keep a clean sheet with David Luiz in the centre of a back four.

“In the middle of a back three with more protection to play the ball, perhaps. But not how they are set up right now.

“Mind you his nerves must be on edge with Gary Cahill next to him right now."
