The fullback insists the Saints players were dreaming of Wembley.
He told Saints Player: “I’m devastated. I wanted to win this competition and so did every other player in that dressing room.
“Everyone’s dream is to play at Wembley, and young players like me, Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) and Calum [Chambers] wanted to achieve that.
“Every time we come to Sunderland we know it’s going to be a very tough game because we haven’t beaten them in six games, but today we were not good enough.
“In the second half today I think that we gave the ball away cheaply and that’s when they took advantage and scored.”
