Wigan Athletic matchwinner Shaun Maloney was thrilled with his contribution in victory over Manchester United.

The Scot is now showing why manager Roberto Martinez sought to sign Maloney from Celtic.

"When I came, I was pretty unfit," admitted Maloney.

"For the first six weeks or so I was doing fitness work for the majority of the time rather than training with the team.

"It was frustrating after that. I just hoped that I would get a chance and when I did that I would stay in.

"It can be pretty deflating not playing, so the recent games have been pretty enjoyable."
