Former Rangers defender and Scotland manager Ian McColl has died aged 81. SFA chief executive Gordon Smith has paid tribute to McColl who led Scotland to 16 victories in 27 matches in charge from 1961 to 1965.
Those wins included the 2-1 victory over England at Wembley in 1963, when Jim Baxter netted a double for 10-man Scotland.
Smith said: "Ian McColl was a wonderful footballer for club and country.
"As a manager, he had one of the best records as Scotland boss and was in charge for some memorable victories - notably the win at Wembley and the fantastic result against Spain in Madrid.
"Everyone at the Scottish FA passes on their condolences to Ian's friends and family at this sad time."
McColl won six League titles, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups in a 15-year career in Govan.
He also won 14 Scotland caps and managed Sunderland following his spell as national team boss.
Rangers chief executive Martin Bain said: "He was a magnificent player for Rangers and, of course, a key member of the famous 'Iron Curtain' defence in the post-war era.
"The club sends its condolences to Ian's family."
