Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega has welcomed Arsenal's approach.
Banega's agent, Marcelo Simonian, was in London this week for talks with the Gunners.
Capable at being deployed as a No.5 or even a No.10, Banega's slick passing would compliment manager Unai Emery's preferred style of play.
But the transfer is not yet a foregone conclusion, despite interest from both parties.
However, La Colina de Nervion says Banega wants assurances from Emery about his position before he puts pen to paper on a contract.
He wants Emery to be up front with him - in the same way he was in telling Jack Wilshere he will be a fringe player if he signs an extension - about his role.
Sevilla want to recoup around €12million (£10million) for the Argentine.
