Seattle Sounders star Alonso: 'I have to forget about US national team'

Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso is putting his dreams of representing the USA national team to the side.

The 28-year old Designated Player has been hoping to switch allegiances from his country of birth, Cuba, to his adopted nation, the USA, for some time now but has been unsuccessful in his pursuits.

Alonso, who has won the past four Sounders MVP awards, has played 16 times for Cuba but believes his chances of adding USA caps to his CV are slim.

"At this point, I don't think it's going to happen," Alonso admitted to MLSsoccer.com on Thursday.

"It's been difficult, with Cuba, with the federation, so it's not going happen.

"I have to be mentally ready to be with the Sounders, play my game and forget about the US national team. If the opportunity comes later, I'll take it. But for now, I've forgotten about it."

The San Cristobal-born midfielder added: "It's been two years waiting for FIFA, Cuba and waiting for the paper.

"I'm frustrated, talking with some people here, talking with some people there, nothing happens. I'm very upset. But I need to be ready to be here."
