Seattle Sounders' Alonso granted US citizenship

Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has been granted US citizenship after spending the past five years in the country.

The 26-year old Cuban arrived in the States in 2007 when he defected from the national team whilst in Houston for the CONCACAF Gold Cup that year.

Alonso was delighted to finally earn citizenship and now has his eye on a spot in the USA national team.

"I'm very happy for that and so proud of myself to get citizenship," said Alonso. "I'm very happy.

"I'm not allowed to play anymore with Cuba, so I think I'll have the opportunity to play with the US national team. If the opportunity comes, it's something I want to do. I'm very happy for that."
