MLS outfit Seattle Sounders were smashed 6-1 by Mexican club Santos Laguna in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Sounders took a 2-1 lead into the quarter-final second leg but were given a rude awakening as Santos skipped away to a two-goal lead inside ten minutes with Christian Suarez and Oribe Peralta netting early.
Seattle got back in the contest thanks to Alvaro Fernandez's 37th minute goal but it was all Santos from then on with Herculez Gomez scoring twice in the second half before Suarez helped himself to his second and then Carlos Ochoa rounded out the rout in the 81st minute.
The Sounders were eliminated 7-3 on aggregate and although the result was extremely disappointing, forward Mauro Rosales said the team can now only look forward to MLS play against Toronto FC, who beat LA Galaxy in the CCL quarters, this weekend.
"(We are) looking for a win. It's tough to recover after that, but we have to.
"It was painful because we didn't expect that. We had lots of confidence before the game and there was confidence at the half. It was a pity that we made the mistakes and they could score.
"They made us pay for every mistake we had in the game. I think that was the reason. It was painful, but we have to keep it up and try to figure it out as soon as possible.""We have the match Saturday. Everybody has to know that we made many mistakes and we have to figure it out as soon as possible because we have to start the competition in the best way," the Argentine said.
