SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP WRAP: Hibs blast five, St Mirren edge Greenock in thriller

The first matches of the second round of the 2011/12 Scottish Communities League Cup were played last night and there were goals galore.

Hibernian flexed their muscle against third division club Berwick Rangers with a 5-0 victory at Easter Road thanks to a double from Martin Scott whilst Akpo Sodje, Garry O'Connor and Ivan Sproule also added goals for Colin Calderwood's side.

In Greenock, St Mirren squandered a lead to eventually come from behind to defeat Greenock Morton 4-3.

Saints midfielder Gary Teale opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Michael Tidser and Peter MacDonald put the home side ahead prior to the half-hour mark.

But St Mirren rallied with Steven Thompson scoring either side of Nigel Hasselbaink's penalty to make it 4-2 before Greenock's Andy Jackson gave his side hope in the 79th minute but it was not enough to edge the visitors.

In other League Cup fixtures, second division East Fife beat top flight Dunfermline Athletic 2-1, Airdrie United scored a 2-0 victory over Raith Rovers, Queen of the South recorded a comfortable 3-0 win against Forfar Athletic, Ross County came from behind away from home to beat Hamilton Academical 2-1 as Aberdeen edged Dundee 1-0.
