Scotland's Strachan backs Sunderland defender Bardsley

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has tipped Phil Bardsley to do the job following his call-up to the national team.

Strachan included the Sunderland defender in his 24-man squad to take on Poland in a friendly in Warsaw next month despite having not picked him since February last year.

Bardsley was largely unused by former Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio at the beginning of the Premier League season but has been in solid form under Gus Poyet and Strachan felt the time was right to give him another opportunity on the international stage.

"Phil has also had problems with injury and not getting a game," said Strachan upon naming his side.

"Sometimes as a football player you fall into that time when life's not great but he's got over that period and now his body language is different on the football field.

"He looks like he is taking responsibility and looks far more disciplined as well, which is good. He has been a big plus for Sunderland."
