Scotland can hold their head up high - Strachan

Despite bowing out of World Cup qualification before the likes of Faroe Islands, San Marino, Liechtenstein and Andorra, Scotland can be proud of their campaign according to Gordon Strachan.

Tuesday night's 2-0 defeat to Serbia in Novi Sad officially ended Scotland's attempts at qualifying for Brazil 2014 and although manager Strachan was aware it is simply not good enough, he could not fault the determination of his players.

"I can understand why people might look at results as poor. They are. There is nothing like winning," he said.

"I said I might have to take a few slaps but we have got to do something.

"We can't just keep plodding along hoping something happens. I want to pick players that can make things happen.

"They can't be embarrassed by what they gave tonight. Sometimes when you play football, as long as you have given it your best shot, you can hold your head up high.

"Sometimes the other team is better.

"I want to watch good football, the kind of football we saw from Serbia."
