Schweinsteiger red was not my decision - Man Utd's Rooney

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has absolved himself of blame for the red card shown to Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger on Tuesday night.

The German midfielder was handed a second yellow card late in his side's 1-1 draw with United in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford for a sliding challenge on Rooney.

The Red Devils striker attempted to jump out of the way of Schweinsteiger's heavy tackle, with some suggesting he dived to win a free-kick, but Rooney says that is simply not the case.

An irate Schweinsteiger, who will miss the return bout next week as a result, pointed the finger at Rooney after the incident while shouting some alleged expletives but the England international denied any wrongdoing.

"I don't really want to say what [Schweinsteiger] said, but I thought it was foul," Rooney said regarding the incident which occurred just outside of Bayern's attacking area.

"If I didn't get out of the way he could have hurt me, he's gone in with his studs and the referee has booked him, so it's not my decision.

"It's not nice to see anyone get sent off. I didn't try and get him sent off, the referee has made the decision. I have tried to stop myself from getting hurt and the referee has had a decision to make.

"He's a great player and he's obviously someone they will miss - and [Javi] Martinez as well being suspended - but they have a great squad of players who can come in."

United head to the Allianz Arena in Munich next week for the second leg with Pep Guardiola's men on Wednesday, April 9.
