Scholes: Man Utd should've signed Cesc or Kroos

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says his old club have missed a trick not landing a top class midfielder.

Scholes wrote in the London Evening Standard: "I have long thought that Manchester United need to sign a top midfielder this summer, but when I look at the options left open to them, the only conclusion I can draw is that the best two candidates have already gone.

"Those two are Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos, great signings for Chelsea and Real Madrid. I rate them both very highly and I believe that either would have made a big impact on United's team. At the level that United are looking, there are very few players who fit the bill. These two are excellent.

"Louis van Gaal is a manager who has the status and the personality to be in charge of Manchester United. The problem for United when it comes to challenging for the title this season is that to my mind they have not signed enough players to change the squad radically to win the League. Fabregas and Kroos were the two names that I believe could have made a significant difference. Both have gone elsewhere."
