Peter Schmeichel believes it is crucial for Manchester United to re-sign David De Gea as soon as they can.
The highly talented Spanish goalkeeper is out of contract in June 2016 and United are desperate for him to sign a long-term extension.
Old Trafford legend Schmeichel, who is arguably rated as United's best ever keeper, has highlighted the importance of tying down a player of De Gea's stature for the good of the club after a tumultuous time over the past 18 months.
"It's very important the club's best players sign new contracts to send a signal," Schmeichel told Sky Sports.
"It shows that they believe in the Manchester United project and believe the club will go back not only to the top of the Premier League but also European football."
