Scharner grateful to West Brom fans for debut welcome

Paul Scharner was delighted with his West Bromwich Albion debut in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

The former Wigan Athletic captain is now eyeing his first derby against Birmingham City.

"I was really, really happy to be back on the football stage because it was my first start after five months," Scharner told the WBA website.

"I enjoyed every minute of the game after so long out. To be honest I was really surprised by the reception from the supporters.

"I'm really happy I signed for West Brom because there is big potential at this club, especially with the supporters.

"When we went 1-0 down the supporters stuck behind us and that's why it was possible to come back. It was a magnificent second half and we came close to winning the game at the end.

"But a draw is a good result."

The Austrian added: "I think the Birmingham game will be totally different to the Tottenham game.

"If we can start confidently from the first minute, like we played in the second half on Saturday, I'm positive we will do well.

"I expect them to be right in our faces and it will be up to us to play good one-touch and two-touch football."
