Schalke have stepped back from negotiations for Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Daily Mail says Schalke are expected to sell Switzerland winger Tranquillo Barnetta to Eintracht Frankfurt, ahead of Germany's midday deadline, but are still unable to afford any fee for Adebayor, despite earmarking him as a prime candidate to solve their lack of firepower.

They would like to take him on a season-long loan, but Tottenham are unlikely to be impressed by a request that they pay half his wages.
